COURAGE

What do you think of when you hear the word "courage"?

In this topic we will be taking a look at courage; how we can be courageous, and how we can bring that out in others.

Courage is a highly desirable attribute. Spanning across centuries of books, movies, and tv shows, the most heroic characters that we love and that leave us inspired will, the majority of the time, have courage.

Other words related to courage are "brave", "daring", "fearless" - all things that we want to be, and that we can be. A courageous act is not so much saving the world like we see in the movies, but it can be something that is played out in our every day lives.

In this topic we will be taking a look at courage; what it is, and how we apply it to our lives to not only positively shape ourselves, but to positively shape society.

TRIUMPH

NOTES //

Courage can be defined as, “the ability to do something that frightens us” // “strength in the face of pain or grief.”

There are many ways that we can demonstrate courage; an act of courage can be as small as being the first to apologise, even if the other person was in the wrong. An act of courage can be displayed by standing up for someone who is being mistreated at school. An act of courage could also be doing something that you normally and naturally wouldn’t do, like public speaking or volunteering in your community.

Courage has different forms; there can be physical courage, and there can be emotional courage. What you could say is that courage is triumph over fear.

FEAR-SHAKER

Courage starts with you, no-one else can be courageous for you.

“You cannot swim for new horizons until you have courage to lose sight of the shore." - William Faulkner

Courage and comfort don’t get on well. If we want to do something courageous, then it is likely we will have to step out of our comfort zone and into a space where things are out of our control. If we are going to be bold, brave, and fearless, then we need to live a life in which we inhale courage, and exhale fear.

RISK-TAKER

It is in our weakest moments that we will most likely need to display the most courage. Regardless of our feelings, despite the fact that we may feel scared, we must not allow these things to cripple us.

"He who is not courageous enough to take risks will accomplish nothing in life." - Muhammed Ali

Boxers demonstrate a huge amount of courage every time they step into the ring for a fight. They are at risk of getting hurt, they are at risk of getting knocked down, and worst of all, they are at risk of losing the fight. But it is through taking risks that they, and we, will accomplish great things.

“Success is never final, failure is never fatal. It is courage that counts." - John Wooden

COURAGEOUS SOCIETY

NOTES //

The words that we say have the power to make or break someone. It has been said that "the tongue is the most powerful weapon."

A study by Masaru Emoto, an author and researcher, found that speaking positively into water will create beautiful water crystals, however speaking negatively into the water would create ugly, distorted crystals. Maybe this can give us a good picture of how our words affect the people around us.

With this in mind, we individually have the power to shape our society, even if it’s just speaking positively into the life of one person.

The word "encourage" actually means to give someone the courage and confidence to do something. So when you speak words of encouragement to someone, you are actually inserting courage into their life.

COURAGEOUS WORDS

Speak positivity over someone’s life and see the impact you can make.

“Be impeccable with your words. Speak with integrity. Say only what you mean. Avoid using the word to speak against yourself or to gossip about others. Use the power of your words in the direction of truth and love." - Don Miguel Ruiz

In a world where, so often, words can be used to bring people down, what if we were to only ever speak words that lift people up and cause them to be courageous.

COURAGEOUS WORLD

Each and every one of us can do something to impact our society, but it will take courage. It will require that we step out of our comfort zone, maybe go beyond what is normal for us, but it will be worth it.

When the world is looking for answers to the daily issues in our society, know that you can choose to be the one to step out, rise up, and positively shape your society.

"Fear is a reaction, courage is a decision." - Winston Churchill
