HEADLINES

Headlines! They are everywhere; we see them on TV, we hear about them on the radio, we read about them in the news, and we are flooded with them on social media. We are always hearing about the latest things that are going on in the world - locally and globally - and unfortunately most of the time, what we see, hear and read seems to be more negative than positive.

In this series we will be taking a look at some of the big topics that have been highlighted and brought to our attention through the media, and opening up the conversation on these in a way that will encourage and inspire us to positively shape our society.

ON-TREND

NOTES //

From movie stars to pop-stars, fashion icons to trend-setters, YouTube bloggers to the Insta-famous, to the friends that we do life with, we can so often compare ourselves with others; the clothes they are wearing, the money they are making, the places they are travelling, the career they are pursuing.

We can so easily get distracted by following the journey that other people are on. Vlogs and Reality TV shows have this incredible way of pulling you into the life of someone else, which can actually cause you to lose focus of where you are going.

KILL YOUR GREATNESS

"The quickest way to kill something great is to compare it with something else.”

Ever get something new; a bag, a jacket, a pair of trainers, and you love them. But the day after you buy your new trainers, you see your friend who also has a new pair of trainers, but they're so much better. Now the new trainers that you're wearing don’t seem all that great anymore.

The look, feel, and trends of society are changing so rapidly that unless we are able to keep up and stay on-trend, we will feel inferior to those around us. It is important that we stay on-trend with society, not so that we can look good, but so that we can have a positive influence.

FIND YOUR GREATNESS

One of the greatest sporting movies of all time has to be Coach Carter. There is a scene in the movie at the end of a basketball final, the winning team, St. Francis, have just beaten the Richmond Oilers. A reporter comes up to the man of the match and says; “How does it feel, people are calling you the next Lebron James?!” but you've got to love his response. He responds with this, “the next Lebron James! Na, I’m the only Ty Crane!”

Do you want to be the next [insert someone you look up to], or are you happy to learn all you can from them, be inspired by their greatness, so you can go on to become uniquely great. The only ‘next’ you can be is the next best version of yourself!

BIBLE //

MATTHEW 20:25-28 [MSG]

You've observed how godless rulers throw their weight around, how quickly a little power goes to their heads. It's not going to be that way with you. Whoever wants to become great must become a servant. Whoever wants to be first among you must be your slave. That is what the Son of Man has done: He came to serve, not to be served.

NOTES //

God designs each and every one of us in a unique way. Getting caught up in the comparison game blinds us to that. It could even make us feel better about ourselves which although may bring a sense of confidence, is actually short-lasting.

But it shows we all have a desire to be approved of.

Jesus’ perception of people is our example to follow, in how he served them. Despite his popularity, he chose to teach and heal and love those around him - even until the point of his death - while expecting nothing in return. It shows that God sees people, and ultimately he sees us.

You can be bold in knowing that individually, you are enough, and what you have in your hands is more than enough for you to step into the greatness God has prepared for you.

NOTES //

In the summer of 2017, London was hit with a series of terror attacks. In the winter of 2018, stories of knife attacks, shootings, and random acts of violence were all over the news. The more these acts of violence happen, the more we can start to think this is the norm, that it's just part of life, part of our society.

There is something about headlines that cause people to take action. They want to put an end to the violence, they want to be the answer. But if all we ever do is react to what is happening in our town, in our city, in our nation, then we will only ever reduce the impact these things have on the people in our community, we will never end it.

A football team is made up of eleven players, out on the pitch, ready to represent their team as best as they can. If we were to take away ten of those players, and just leave one on their own to win the game, the chances of success are significantly reduced. The size of the challenge has significantly increased.

"We can’t do everything, but we can do something."

When we are faced with issues in our society, we can become overwhelmed by the size of the challenge ahead of us, but it is important to realise we are not facing this on our own.

TOGETHER

There is something powerful about community - people getting together, supporting one another, doing life together. A crowd may have the same number of people in it as a community, but the difference is that in a community you are known by name to the people around you.

"No one sits alone, no one stands alone."

What if we could create community right where we are; in our schools, in our neighbourhoods, in our sports teams, where everyone is cared for as an individual. Because if we as individuals feel loved, cared for, and encouraged, then when we come together as a community we will have so much more to offer. Together we are better, together we are stronger.

// BIBLE

HEBREWS 10:22-25 [MSG]
So let’s do it—full of belief, confident that we’re presentable inside and out. Let’s keep a firm grip on the promises that keep us going. He always keeps his word. Let’s see how inventive we can be in encouraging love and helping out, not avoiding worshiping together as some do
but spurring each other on, especially as we see the big Day approaching.

NOTES //

God promises that through trusting him you will find new strength, that he has plans to give you a hope and a future, that you will walk and not grow faint, that despite all things victory is ours from what he did on the cross and nothing can separate us from his love.

So as we go out into our day to day worlds, let’s carry these in our hearts. From believing these promises we can love others, from knowing that we are loved just the same.
