HEROES

If I was to say to you the names; Bruce Wayne, Tony Stark, Steve Rogers - truth is, not all of us would know whose these people are. Some of you are big superhero fans, so we know, you know. But for the rest of us, here's some help... These names are the names of superhero's we all know; Batman, Iron Man, and Captain America.

Of course we know their superhero names, their "made-up" names, because it is the superhero-side of these individuals that we like to celebrate, elevate and spectate as we go to the cinema to see them in action.

But the superhero we love to watch is only part of who they truly are. Away from the powers, outside of the public eye, each of these individuals are human beings - people that can make choices about how they want to live, just like you and I.

So what is it that makes a hero? Behind the mask, without the cape, free from the suit, what qualifies someone, an individual, a human being to be called a hero?

ON THE FIELD

NOTES //

There are few movie scenes more epic and more entertaining than watching the Avengers come together in battle against the bad guys. Seeing them on

the field, fighting for their own life and the lives of others make for some incredible scenes. But what makes them who they are on the field comes down to who they are off the field.

In sporting interviews, when a coach is asked about one of their players, we will often hear them say something along the lines, "they are the same person on and off the field."

So what is it that makes a hero on the field and off the field? Well, let's first take a look at 'on the field.'

_NOTHING LEFT TO GIVE

Imagine if you could finish each and every day with nothing left to give. You have loved people as much as you can, worked as hard as you can, laughed more than you knew you could, and you get to bed with a feeling that you could not have given any more today.

“Remembering you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose.” - Steve Jobs

What we so often see in heroes are people who are willing to put their life on the line for the sake of others. They will do more for others than is ever expected. What if we could do the same - it may not be so extreme as putting our life on the line, but it may require from us to step out of our comfort zone to do the best we can for the benefit of someone else.

_ STRONGER TOGETHER

"If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together."

There are few things you can achieve in life alone, or if you do, it won't be much. Somewhere, in some way, you will eventually have to include others in the life that you live. Whether that be your social life, school life, or work life.

Just as a football team will never win with one player, you will never become all you can be if you decide to go alone. There is power in doing things together, as a community. We come as we are, but we don’t stay that way, because as we come together we grow together and become more than we could have ever become alone.

1 // WHAT MAKES SOMEONE A HERO?

2 // HOW CAN WE GIVE EVERYTHING TO EVERY DAY?

3 // WHY ARE WE BETTER AND STRONGER TOGETHER?

“SUPER” HERO

NOTES //

When we think of heroes in our lives, usually it's not someone we see on TV, or someone we read about in a book. The people in your life that you can call a hero might be your Dad, you Mum, you Grandparents, a friend, a brother, a sister, a teacher.

These are the everyday heroes. People who refuse to let life's challenges hold them back. People who will not take "no" for an answer. People who believe they can make a difference, and work hard every single day to do so.

We too can be the kind of people that make a difference in our society. We may not look like your typical 'hero', but we can make a huge difference in our community, in our city, in our country.

_LIVE READY

Truth is, we don’t know what tomorrow will look like; the challenges we will face, the obstacles we will come up against, the things that will happen, but let's choose to live ready so that we are prepared to face whatever comes our way.

"Leaders cannot rise above the limitations of their character" - John Maxwell

Start now and become the person you want to be so that you are ready for any moment, any opportunity that comes your way. Because when the time comes for us to step up, we may not feel like it, we may be stressed, we may be under pressure, but this is when our true character will shine through, and it is our character that we can begin to work on now.

_EXTRA-ORDINARY

So many extraordinary things happen through the lives of ordinary people. We don’t need super powers to make a difference. Use what is in your hand right now, and immerse yourself in whatever is in front of you today, and allow that to be the start of something great that will happen through the life that you live.

We need to live with integrity - doing what you say you are going to do when you say you are going to do it. A heart of integrity cannot remain unmoved when we have the power to help, and it is integrity that moves us to intervene on behalf of the powerless.

Decide to be someone who will leave a mark on the world, who will make an impact, who will positively shape society.

QUESTIONS //

1 // WHO IS YOUR HERO?

2 // WHAT DOES INTEGRITY LOOK LIKE IN OUR LIVES?

3 // HOW CAN WE DO SOMETHING EXTRAORDINARY?
