SHAPE THE FUTURE

The future is something you can get excited about. It is full of more than you even know, more than you can imagine in your wildest dreams. But the truth is, not everyone looks to the future with hope.

What do you see when you look to the future?

Some of us might see everything. All that we hope for, the sum total of our imagination, everything that we are dreaming for.

Others of us may see something. The college we will go to, the university degree we will be studying, the career path we are likely to follow.

And then there are some of us who might see absolutely nothing. Every time we try to look to the future we cannot get past the present reality of our current circumstances and it blurs our vision of all the life that is ahead of us.

The future can be anything from the next moment in our lives, to the next 50 years that are ahead. When we take the time to think about our future, it can be exciting and daunting all at the same time.

But let me tell you, although we may not know what the future holds, we can be certain that it is something to get excited about!

In this series we will be taking a look at the future, both near and far, and looking at some of the things that hold us back from stepping into our potential, and realising that we, each and every one of us, has the ability to shape the future and shape what our society will look like for generations to come.

TOMORROW NEVER COMES

NOTES //

So often we can worry about tomorrow;

“What questions will come up in my exam?”

“Will I complete my homework on time?”

“Will we win tomorrow’s big game?!”

Whatever it might be, there are so many things that are unclear and uncertain about tomorrow, that we can be immobilised by worry. But this doesn’t have to be the case. We can face the unknown of tomorrow with confidence, and in fact be mobilised by the positive expectation that we have.

PLAN FOR TOMORROW

Tomorrow never comes. We will never live in tomorrow, because it is always a day away. Therefore, if we worry about tomorrow, we will be in this constant state of worry, since we are worrying about something that will never come our way.

And what effect does that have on us? It leaves us anxious and apprehensive about the future, wrecking our ability to engage with the present. Plan what we can, and be ready for anything else that comes our way.

"Who you will be tomorrow will depend on the choices that you make today."

TAKE ON TODAY

Worrying about tomorrow won’t add anything positive to today. Every day, Benjamin Franklin would ask himself two questions; first thing when he got up in the morning, he would ask himself "what good will I do today?" and then each night before going to bed he would ask "what good did I do today?"

You don’t have to ask these two questions, but find something that will help you each and every day to shift your focus to today; what you want to do, what you want to achieve, the positive impact that you want to have on the people in our society.

"Take out worry by taking on today.

2 // WHY DO WE WORRY?

3 // WHAT CAN YOU DO TODAY TO MAKE A POSITIVE IMPACT ON YOUR TOMORROW?

NOTES //

What do you see when you look to the future? We asked this same question at the start of this series, but hopefully by now you see more than you did before. By now you have hopefully allowed your imagination to stretch further and see a positive future ahead.

CREATE THE FUTURE

When we look ahead to the future, we can so easily think everything that will ever be created, designed, imagined, and produced has been done. Although some things might remain the same, so much will change, just like it has done in the past.

In a time when you had to light a candle in order to see at night; someone envisioned the light bulb, which would light up night almost as if it was day.

In a time when books were only for there extremely wealthy; someone had the idea of printing, which would give billions access to books and the education they need to go on and create their own inventions.

In a time when canoes and animals were the fastest method of transportation; someone thought up the idea of the wheel, which would change the speed at which people could move forever.

"The best way to predict your future is to create it." - Abraham Lincoln

SHAPE THE FUTURE

As we head into the future - tomorrow, next week, next year, 50 years' time; will we be shaped by the future, or will we choose to shape the future?

Technology is often used to improve the way we live, to enhance human life. But throughout history, there have been a minority who have taken the tools of technology and used them as a weapon.

Electricity has the power to light up a city, but it also has the power to kill someone.

A plane has the ability to carry hundreds of people across the globe, but it also has the ability to take down a skyscraper and leave thousands under a pile of rubble.

We can let the future be something that is shaped by others, and then just sit back in comfort, watching the world go by and talking about the state of society. Or, we can choose to engage with the world and transform our society.

Don't let the future be something that happens to you. Let the future be something that happens through you. One generations impossible is the next generations normal, so choose now to positively shape society and create the new normal for what life looks like living in your community, your city, your nation.
