WE INFLUENCE SOCIETY

We can be influenced by so many things that surround us each and every day; the programs we watch, the teams we support, the music we listen to, the people we spend time with.

Influence is defined as "the capacity to have an effect on the character, development, or behaviour of someone" and it is something that we all have.

Some people are seen as more influential than others because they have an impact on a greater number of people. But know this; from where you are right now, you can have an influence on the people around you, and it is up to you whether that influence is positive or negative.

In this series we will be taking a look at what it is that influences us, and how we are able to have a positive influence on society.

CIRCLE OF INFLUENCE

NOTES //

Who influences you? Friends, family, teachers, class-mates, team- mates, celebrities...

"We are the average of the five people we spend the most time with." - Jim Rohn

Who we spend time with and the people we surround ourselves with

will have a significant influence on who it is we become.

ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED?

There is this film called Nerve, and it's based around a mobile app through which people can enter this game as a "player" or a "watcher". If you choose to become a 'player' then you have to take on whatever challenges you are given in order to stay in the game; “kiss a stranger,” “get a tattoo,” “lie under a train.” As the game progresses, the challenges become more and more extreme, and eventually the 'players' end up doing things they would never usually do if not under this kind of influence. And why? So they can increase the number of ‘watchers’ they have and impress people who they do not even know.

We may not be in the game, but we too can live our lives trying to impress people, becoming people-pleasers who do things we do not want to do, to impress people we don’t even like. This only ever leaves us unsatisfied, never being able to have a positive influence on the people around us.

HOME-TEAM ADVANTAGE

When sporting teams play at their home ground, they have an advantage before the game even starts, because the crowd is on their side. The cheers from the crowd, the chants from the supporting fans, all of this has a positive influence on the home-team players and only helps them to perform better.

Who we surround ourself with each and every day can determine whether we feel encouraged to go out and be the best we can be, or deflated, with no motivation to get up and make difference in society.

“Show me your friends and I’ll show you your future”

You need to surround yourself with “home-team fans” - people who are on your side and only ever want the best for you.

QUESTIONS //

1 // WHO INFLUENCES YOU?

2 // HAVE YOU EVER DONE SOMETHING YOU DIDN’T WANT TO DO TO IMPRESS PEOPLE?

3 // DO YOU HAVE ANY PEOPLE IN YOUR LIFE WHO ENCOURAGE YOU LIKE “HOME-TEAM FANS”?

POSITIVE INFLUENCE

NOTES //

Whether we realise it or not, we all have influence.

The influence we have on people may be good or bad, positive or negative, but what if we were to decide that we will only ever have a positive influence in our society.

Sometimes we can try so hard to fit in with the people and culture around us, that we lose the very part of us that will cause us to have the most influence.

“You will never influence the world by trying to be like it.”

If we want to have a positive influence in society, we must first start with the people around us.

WORDS THAT EMPOWER

Surround yourself with good people; people that cause and encourage you to grow, to become better, and commit to helping them get better too so that they can go further than they could ever go by themselves.

There is no more noble occupation in the world than to assist another human being—to help someone succeed.” - Alan Loy McGinnis

The thing about empowering people is that we have to not only see them for who they are right now, but for who they can become. Everyone has the potential for greatness, and we have the opportunity to identify that, speak into that with uplifting words, and do the best that we can to set them up for a win in life.

Sometimes we hear negative things about people, but what if that negative news was to end with us, and the only news we ever have to tell about anyone is positive news.

ACTIONS THAT INSPIRE

Influence doesn't come instantaneously, it comes gradually. When there is an issue in society - knife crime on the streets, innocent people caught up in terror attacks - people don’t want words as much as they want actions.

"Actions speak louder than words."

We can have an influence through the words that we speak for a limited time, but if we are truly going to earn influence, then it will be because of our actions. Small every day actions have the power to make significant change.

If we are going to positively shape society and influence others to do the same, then we have to lead by example.

2 // HOW CAN THE WORDS WE SPEAK EMPOWER PEOPLE?

3 // HOW CAN YOUR ACTIONS INFLUENCE PEOPLE TO POSITIVELY SHAPE SOCIETY?
